The Mitchell, as it is known now, is not only a beautiful home with appealing southern character, but a very special place with a rich history. The land was first acquired through the land grant act of 1838 and included the current 99 acres the home sits on.

Originally built in 1854, The Mitchell is one of the oldest homes in Lee County.

Ira Brown Mitchell acquired the home around 1912 and was the first Mitchell to live there.

Ira Brown Mitchell died in 1927 and his wife, Virginia C. Mitchell, continued to live in the house. Unable to manage the farm by herself, it was at that point that her son, William Brown Mitchell, moved into the house with his family to help. Upon his mother's death, W.B. Mitchell acquired the land and house.

Doris Mitchell Budd, born on June 26, 1921, is one of three children of William Brown & Virginia Mitchell and recalls moving into the home when she was about six years old, around 1927.

On March 5, 2017, Doris and her daughter, Valerie Ganann, had a conversation about her years in the home. Click here to see what she had to say.
